Cartier Ballon Bleu 28 mm Rose Gold W69002Z2 Strap Guide – Correct 14 mm Size & Best Straps

Cartier Ballon Bleu 28 mm Rose Gold W69002Z2 Strap Guide – Correct 14 mm Size & Best Straps - Helvetus

The W69002Z2 is the smallest Ballon Bleu and, in this configuration, one of the most valuable things you can wear casually: a 28 mm case in solid 18K rose gold, on a solid 18K rose gold bracelet, with a silvered opaline dial, black Roman numerals, blued-steel sword hands and the fluted crown with its blue cabochon.

It is also, at this size, jewellery. A 28 mm gold watch does not get worn alone — it goes on a wrist that already has bangles, chains and other watches on it.

Which creates a problem nobody warns you about at the boutique.

Lug Width: the W69002Z2 takes a 14 mm strap

On the product page, select the 14 mm option.

The 28 mm Ballon Bleu case uses a 14 mm strap — the narrowest size in the range, and the same figure Cartier uses across the 28 mm case. It is the size we stock for this model.

Case Strap size
42 mm 20 mm
36 mm 18 mm
33 mm 16 mm
28 mm (W69002Z2) 14 mm

Two notes before you fit anything:

  • Standard spring bars. This reference predates Cartier's interchangeable bracelet system, so there is nothing proprietary to work around. A spring bar tool or our installation tool is enough.
  • Tape the lugs, and take your time. This is solid gold and gold is soft. A slipped tool leaves a mark that can only be corrected by removing metal.

Keep the links. The bracelet on this reference has twelve links including the deployant link, and they are 18K gold. Store the removed ones with the bracelet — replacing gold links is not a small expense, and an incomplete gold bracelet costs you real money at resale.

Why this bracelet is the most vulnerable one Cartier sells

Three facts that only become a problem when you put them together.

Gold is soft. Considerably softer than steel. It marks from contact that steel would shrug off.

A small watch shares its wrist. At 28 mm this is a size worn in a stack, next to bangles and chains — and metal-on-metal contact all day is exactly what puts hairlines across polished links.

And gold cannot be refinished for free. A steel bracelet gets polished and comes back looking new. Polishing gold removes gold, permanently, and there is a limit to how many times you can do it before the links lose their crispness and their edges soften.

Put a strap on and the problem disappears entirely. Leather cannot scratch the jewellery next to it and cannot be scratched by it, and the gold bracelet sits safely in its box while the watch carries on being worn. That is not a downgrade — it is the only way to wear a gold bracelet watch daily without paying for it in metal.

And the watch reads completely differently

There is a second reason, and on this size it is bigger than people expect.

On the gold bracelet, gold runs the whole way around your wrist. The case stops being a watch and becomes the widest point of a gold bangle — beautiful, but the dial is almost incidental.

Put the same case on a 14 mm strap and all that gold is concentrated in one place. The case reads as an object again, the proportions of the Ballon Bleu become visible, and the watch looks noticeably more expensive per square millimetre than it does surrounded by matching metal. It also sits far better in a stack, because it is no longer competing with your other pieces to be the metal on your wrist.

The four best straps for the W69002Z2

1. Black leather — the one that lets you stop worrying

If the point is to keep a gold bracelet out of contact with everything else you wear, this is the strap that does it without asking anything of you. Smooth black is flat, unfussy and sits comfortably alongside other jewellery, and against rose gold it gives maximum contrast — which makes the case read brighter and warmer than it does against its own metal.

It is also the least precious thing on this list, which matters when the whole idea is having something you do not mind wearing every day.

2. Blue crocodile — for when it should look like jewellery

Blue Crocodile Strap for Cartier Ballon Bleu

Blue is already on this watch twice — the cabochon in the crown and the blued steel of the hands — and blue against rose gold has become one of the most reliable pairings in modern jewellery. Crocodile is what keeps it in the right register: on a solid gold case, an exotic skin answers the metal properly, where a plain band can look like an afterthought.

This is the dressed-up version, and at 14 mm the scales are small and fine, which suits a delicate case far better than a wide strap would.

3. Blue leather — the same idea, every day

The cooling effect of the blue without the preciousness of the crocodile. It softens a very warm watch, picks up the hands and the cabochon, and is the easiest of the four to wear without thinking about it. A good second strap if black is already your first.

4. Black crocodile — the evening version

Maximum contrast and maximum formality. Black against rose gold is the oldest dress combination there is, and in crocodile it stops a small strap looking plain beneath a solid gold case. This is the one for evenings, when the watch should look like what it cost.

Every colour and size is in the Cartier Ballon Bleu strap collection.

Fit, in one line

Order 14 mm, tape the lugs, and keep the gold links with the bracelet.

The bracelet is safest in the box

Nothing about fitting a strap modifies the watch or affects its value. The bracelet stays yours, undamaged, and the watch becomes something you can wear next to everything else on your wrist without adding a year of hairlines to a piece of solid gold.

Helvetus straps are shaped for the Ballon Bleu case in 14 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm and 20 mm, so the leather meets the curve of the case cleanly instead of leaving the gap a generic band always leaves.
