The small yellow gold Tank Louis Cartier is the version of the Tank that people picture when they think of the Tank. Solid 18K gold, 29.5 × 22 mm, 6.35 mm thin, quartz so it is ready whenever you are, and a beaded crown with its cabochon at the side. Cartier still lists it as one of the most sought-after watches in the entire Tank collection, and it has looked essentially the same since the 1920s.
It has also never had a bracelet. Not this reference, not any Tank Louis Cartier, not in a hundred years. The watch has always been a gold case and a strap — which makes the strap half of the design and the only part of it that will ever wear out.
Lug Width: the WGTA0342 takes a 16 mm strap
On the product page, select the 16 mm option.
The small Tank Louis case measures 29.5 × 22 mm and uses a 16 mm strap. That figure is well established: it appears in exact-reference specification tables for the small Tank case, in the sizing charts of independent strap makers who list the Tank Small at 16 mm, and it is the size we stock for the model.
Two notes on fitting:
- Standard spring bars. No QuickSwitch, no proprietary fitting. A spring bar tool or our installation tool is all this takes.
- Thin straps only. At 6.35 mm this is one of the slimmest watches Cartier builds. A padded strap adds bulk the case cannot carry and ruins the proportions immediately. Every strap in our Tank collection is cut slim and shaped to follow the brancards, so the leather continues the line of the case instead of interrupting it.
Which Tank Louis do you have?
| Case measures | Model | Strap |
|---|---|---|
| 29.5 × 22 mm | Small (WGTA0342) | 16 mm |
| 33.7 × 25.5 mm | Large | 19 mm |
| 38.1 × 27.75 mm | The newer automatic large model | A different, larger case — do not assume 19 mm |
Choose the gold buckle
Every Helvetus Tank strap is ordered with a buckle finish, and on an 18K yellow gold case the answer is gold.
This matters more than it sounds. The buckle is the only piece of hardware visible alongside the case on your wrist, and a silver-toned buckle next to solid yellow gold is the one mismatch everybody notices — in person and in every photo. Silver and rose gold are there for the steel and rose gold Tanks. For this one, gold.
Why a gold Tank goes through straps
There is a specific pattern with gold dress watches, and it is worth naming.
The case is treated carefully — gold is soft, owners know it, and the watch comes off before anything risky. The strap gets none of that consideration. It absorbs the cuff, the wrist, the summer and the years, and on a case this thin it is doing all of that in a very slim piece of leather.
Factory alligator creases at the lug ends first, then darkens where it meets the skin. On steel that reads as character. Against 18K gold it just reads as tired, because the contrast is unforgiving — and replacing it at a boutique costs a multiple of what a strap should.
That is the whole opportunity here. A fresh strap makes a WGTA0342 look exactly as it did in the vitrine, for a fraction of what the watch is insured for.
The four best straps for the WGTA0342
1. Black crocodile — gold and alligator, the dress recipe
Black Crocodile Strap for Cartier Tank
Black alligator against yellow gold is the oldest formal pairing in watchmaking and still the sharpest. The crocodile texture gives a very plain, very small watch something to say at close range, and the hard contrast between black and gold makes the case look brighter than it does on anything warmer. On a 16 mm strap the scales are fine and tight, which suits the scale of the watch perfectly. This is the one for evenings, and for anyone who wants the gold to be the loudest thing on the wrist.
2. Brown crocodile — the warm alternative
Brown Crocodile Strap for Cartier Tank
Brown and yellow gold share a temperature, so brown does the opposite of black: it softens the watch and makes the gold look richer rather than brighter. It is closer to what Cartier has traditionally delivered gold Tanks on, and it is the more wearable of the two exotics — this is the version of the watch that works at lunch as well as at dinner.
3. Green leather — the modern pairing
Green Leather Strap for Cartier Tank
Green against yellow gold has become one of the defining combinations of the last few years, and a small rectangular case is the ideal place for it: the colour arrives as a detail rather than a statement. It makes a very traditional watch look current without touching anything that makes it a Tank. The choice for owners who want their gold Tank to look chosen rather than inherited.
4. Red leather — Cartier's own colour
Red Leather Strap for Cartier Tank
Red has followed Cartier since the boxes, and small gold Tanks have been worn on coloured straps for decades — it is part of how these watches have always been personalised. Against gold and a silvered dial it lands as confident rather than loud, and it is the single fastest way to make a watch you have owned for years feel like a different one.
Every colour and width is in the Cartier Tank, Tank Louis, Américaine, Solo and Must strap collection.
