On almost every MoonSwatch, the case is the colour and everything else works around it. Desert doesn't do that. Swatch swapped the assignment.
Here the case, crown, pushers and hands are sand. The dial, bezel and strap are greige — taupe, the colour of shaded sand. Two colours running along two separate paths through the watch, and the hands belong to the case rather than to the dial they sit on.
That last detail is the one that makes this mission unusual for strap buyers, because it means the strap isn't an accessory Swatch bolted on at the end. It's the third member of the taupe path, with sand-coloured topstitching tying it back to the other one. On this watch, the factory band is part of the design.

The case has a grain, and the strap decides whether you see it
Here's the detail almost nobody notices, and it's the best reason to change the band.
A reviewer who put this watch under a macro lens found that the sand-coloured case has the appearance of small grains in it — an actual texture in the Bioceramic, not just a colour. It's a lovely piece of design: a watch named after sand that has a little sand in its surface.
Now look at what sits next to it. Woven Velcro has a soft, fuzzy nap — a texture of its own, in a closely related tone, occupying more of your wrist than the case does. Two soft textures in two near-identical warm colours, side by side, and neither one reads. The case's grain simply disappears into the fabric's.
Smooth rubber has no nap at all. Put it beside that case and the grain becomes the only texture on the watch, which is exactly where it should be. That's the trade here — you give up a strap that was genuinely specified, and you get back the one detail the specification was hiding.
One practical note. Bioceramic is hard but marks more easily than steel, and the case is a monobloc that can't be sent away for a tidy-up — so work on a soft cloth, keep the spring-bar tool square to the bar, and keep metal away from the case flanks.
The best straps for the Mission on Earth Desert
1. Beige with white — join the sand path
The pick that inverts Swatch's decision, and improves on it. A beige strap with a white interior puts the largest surface on the watch onto the sand side rather than the taupe side, so the case and hands stop being the minority and start being the whole watch. The taupe dial then reads as a deliberate darker centre instead of a near-match, and the white edge gives you the one crisp line a two-warm-tone watch never has. Start here.
2. Brown on brown — stay on the taupe path
The conservative answer and the one closest to Swatch's intent. A tone-on-tone brown strap keeps the strap where the designers put it — in the dial's family rather than the case's — but in a material with a defined edge and no fuzz. It's the deepest, most grown-up version of this watch, and it's the configuration that makes it look least like a novelty. Filed under a different mission, which is exactly the point made further up.
3. Beige with a white line — the same idea, one degree finer
If pick one feels a shade too bright at the edges, this is the quieter cut of the same decision. A beige strap with a fine white line keeps the sand-path logic but reduces the white to a stroke rather than a border, so the whole assembly stays warm and the contrast is a detail rather than an outline. The most understated way to wear this watch without going dark.
4. Black — let the two tones fight it out
Sand against taupe is a genuinely close pairing, and close pairings need something to be measured against. A black rubber strap supplies that: with something properly dark below the case, the sand reads lighter, the taupe reads deeper, and the small difference between them becomes visible instead of ambiguous. It's also the pick that makes the sand-coloured hands easiest to find.
