Tudor Black Bay Chrono 79350 Strap Guide – Best Rubber Straps & Fit

Tudor Black Bay Chrono 79350 Strap Guide – Best Rubber Straps & Fit - Helvetus

The 79350 is the first Black Bay Chrono, and it is not the same watch as the one that replaced it. Same 41mm case, same movement family, same snowflake hand — but Tudor changed one thing in 2021 that most people never notice, and it happens to be the thing that decides what strap you should put on it.

Your bezel is bare steel. The one that replaced it is not.

Strap size and fit guide — for once, this is the easy part

Your Tudor Black Bay Chrono (Ref. M79350) has a 41mm case and a 22mm lug width, with a 50mm lug-to-lug.

On Helvetus product pages, select "Black Bay Chrono".

And here is a rare piece of good news. Tudor's chronograph family is the one part of the range where you genuinely cannot get the width wrong:

Watch Year Case Lug width
Black Bay Chrono 79350 2017 41mm 22mm
Black Bay Chrono S&G 79363N 2019 41mm 22mm
Black Bay Chrono 79360N / 79360B 2021 41mm 22mm

Four references, one width. After the Black Bay 54 at 20mm, the Bronze at 23mm and two Rangers two millimetres apart, the Chrono is the family where every generation takes the same strap. Select "Black Bay Chrono" and you are done.

Checklist: 41mm case, 22mm lugs, select "Black Bay Chrono".

The bezel is why your watch needs a different strap to the new one

Here is the difference nobody writes about.

The 79350's bezel is a single piece of steel — a fixed monobloc bezel with the tachymeter scale engraved directly into the metal. It is the same bezel construction Tudor introduced on the Heritage Chrono, and it is the defining visual feature of this reference.

In 2021, the 79360N replaced it with a steel bezel carrying a matt black anodised aluminium insert. Two pieces instead of one, and — critically — a black ring where there used to be steel.

That sounds like a detail. On the wrist it changes the whole balance of the watch.

On the newer model, the dial sits inside a black ring, which sits inside a steel case. There is a built-in dark border, so the dial reads as part of a larger dark mass and a black strap simply continues something already there.

On your 79350 there is no dark border at all. The matte black dial ends, and then it is steel all the way out to the lugs — brushed on top, polished on the chamfers, bright in every direction. The dial reads as a smaller, more isolated disc floating in metal. It is a cleaner and arguably more elegant look, and it is also why the watch can feel top-heavy and bright on a steel bracelet: there is nothing anywhere on the watch to anchor the dial.

Which means the strap has a job on this reference that it does not have on the newer one: it is the only dark element available. A dark strap gives the dial a border, pulls the eye back to it, and stops all that steel from dominating. The later model gets that for free from its bezel insert. Yours does not.

That is the whole argument, and it is why the picks below lean darker than they would on a 79360N.

What else you should know about it

The 79350 arrived in 2017 and it mattered. It was the first Tudor chronograph with a manufacture movement — the MT5813, built on the Breitling B01 base, with a column wheel, vertical clutch, chronometer certification and around 70 hours of reserve. Tudor had been buying chronograph movements in; this was the moment that stopped.

The case is 41mm and unapologetically thick at close to 15mm, with 200m of water resistance, screw-down crown and screw-down pushers whose fluted design nods to Tudor's vintage chronographs. The dial is matte black with applied markers, a snowflake hour hand, small seconds at 9, a 45-minute counter at 3 and a date at 6.

One more detail worth knowing, because it tells you what Tudor expected: both versions of the 79350 shipped with an additional denim fabric strap in the box, alongside either the riveted steel bracelet or the leather strap. Denim. On a chronograph. That was a deliberate choice, and it is a better idea than it sounds — more on that below.

The best straps for the Black Bay Chrono 79350

Black rubber — the hero, and it does a job here it does not do elsewhere. Everything above comes down to this. Your watch has no black bezel ring, so the strap is the only dark element on it. Black rubber gives the dial a frame, drops the visual weight of all that bright steel, and makes the case read as 41mm rather than as a slab. It also solves the practical problem — this is a 15mm-thick watch and rubber sits it lower and lighter than the riveted bracelet ever will. On the newer 79360N black is a safe default. On the 79350 it is a correction. Black Tudor Black Bay Rubber Strap — select "Black Bay Chrono"

Denim — because Tudor put one in the box. This is not an aftermarket experiment. Both 79350 references came with a denim fabric strap included, which makes denim the only strap on this list that is factory-sanctioned for this exact watch. And it works for a specific reason: denim is dark enough to give the dial the border it needs, but textured enough that it does not read as severe against a fully polished-and-brushed steel case. It is the most characterful thing you can put on this watch and the one that suits its slightly rebellious position in the Tudor catalogue. Denim Watch Straps

Brown leather — the one the -0002 came on. One of the two launch references shipped on a leather strap, so this is the other factory look. Brown warms up a watch that is otherwise entirely cool — black dial, steel bezel, steel case — and it is the pairing that makes the 79350 look like a vintage-inspired chronograph rather than a modern tool watch. It also handles the thickness better than you would expect, because a softer strap lets a tall case settle rather than perch. Brown Leather Strap for Tudor — select "Black Bay 41 Chrono"

Grey — the tonal one, and it only makes sense on this reference. Grey against a black-bezel 79360N would be odd; against your all-steel bezel it is exactly right. It picks up the brushed surfaces of the bezel and lugs, keeps the watch monochrome, and gives you a version of the 79350 that reads as a design object rather than a racing chronograph. The most understated of the four and the one people ask about. Grey Tudor Black Bay Rubber Strap — select "Black Bay Chrono"

Getting the order right

Colour first, then select "Black Bay Chrono" on rubber, or "Black Bay 41 Chrono" on leather. Both are 22mm, and every Black Bay Chrono generation shares that width — so this is one of the few Tudors where the only thing you can get wrong is the colour.

FAQ

What lug width is the Tudor Black Bay Chrono 79350? 22mm, on a 41mm case. Every Black Bay Chrono generation — 79350, 79363N and 79360N — uses 22mm.

Is the 79350 the same as the 79360N? Same case size, same movement family, same width. The visible difference is the bezel: the 79350 has a one-piece steel bezel with an engraved tachymeter scale, while the 2021 model has a steel bezel with a black anodised aluminium insert.

Does that change which strap I should buy? Yes. The newer model already has a black ring around the dial, so a black strap just continues it. The 79350 has no dark element anywhere, which makes the strap the only thing that can frame the dial — so darker straps do more work on this reference.

Did the 79350 come with a spare strap? Both launch references included an additional denim fabric strap alongside the bracelet or leather strap.

Which option do I select on Helvetus? "Black Bay Chrono" on the rubber straps, "Black Bay 41 Chrono" on the leather.

Final thoughts

The 79350 is the Black Bay Chrono people quietly prefer — the one-piece steel bezel is cleaner than the insert that replaced it, and it was the watch that proved Tudor could build a proper chronograph. It is also the version that gains most from coming off the bracelet, because there is nothing else on the watch giving the dial an edge.
