Two more tells on the original. The earliest examples have the so-called "smiley" dial, where the words "self-winding" curve gently upward — collectors hunt for it specifically. And the burgundy on this generation appears twice: on the bezel, and as a small insert in the crown.

Why the two millimetres matter
Here is the part that actually affects what you buy.
The 2016 update added roughly 2mm of height to the Black Bay to make room for Tudor's in-house movement. The original sits at about 13mm; the reference that replaced it is around 14.8mm measured over the domed crystal.
That is why almost all Black Bay strap advice you will find carries an unspoken assumption: keep it slim. The later Black Bay is a tall watch — reviewers say plainly that it sits high and struggles under a shirt cuff — so the standard guidance is to avoid anything that adds more height.

The 79220R is warmer than people expect from press photos.
